According to a study made by the Federation of Finnish Enterprises Northern Ostrobothnia, the economic effects of the Hanhikivi 1 project are visible in the everyday life of businesses in the region.
Nearly half of the respondents say they have benefitted from Fennovoima’s nuclear power plant project. Almost 30 percent of respondents say the project has had a positive effect on their turnover over the past two years.
”It is great to see that the project already has effects on local businesses and in our area. When the actual construction of the nuclear power plant begins, the project’s economic effects will show even more clearly in all industries” says Marjo Kolehmainen, Managing Director at the Federation of Finnish Enterprises Northern Ostrobothnia.
Entrepreneurs have a positive outlook on the future. 53 percent of respondents estimate that their company’s turnover will increase because of the Hanhikivi 1 project in the next two years.
15 percent say their number of employees has grown due to the Hanhikivi 1 project, and almost 30 percent estimate they will hire at least 1 new employee in upcoming years. Most of the companies in the project that come from Northern Ostrobothnia employ 50 to 100 people but also many private entrepreneurs are involved.
45 percent of the companies from Pyhäjoki which replied to the survey are involved in the Hanhikivi 1 project. 27 percent of companies from Raahe replying are involved in the project. Out of all the respondents, about 26 percent are involved in building Finland’s sixth nuclear power plant.
“The Raahe area is important for the Hanhikivi 1 project. This is evident from the large number of local companies in Fennovoima’s site register and from the growth of service demand in the area,” says Risto Pietilä, Manager of Raahe District Business Services and Development Center.
According to the survey, construction and transport industries have benefitted most by far. The tourism and ICT industries as well as heavy industry and construction show biggest expectations about Hanhikivi 1’s economic effects.
The Federation of Finnish Enterprises Northern Ostrobothnia and Fennovoima carried out the survey together. A link to the online questionnaire was sent to companies that are members of the Federation of Finnish Enterprises Northern Ostrobothnia or registered in Fennovoima’s site register. 316 companies replied to the survey. 90 percent were from Northern Ostrobothnia and 10 percent from other areas in Finland.
